CWs: violence, yandere, kidnapping(potentially), unhealthy relationship, manipulation, murder, grimdark death themes/animal death reference, ableism toward an autistic character
- Jo is a childhood friend of Light who grew apart over the years only to reunite during university in a sense; they're in the same class, she knows he is meticulous about his studies so why does he not seem to care, despite pretending to...?
- Focused on math and being an overachiever, expects others (particularly Light) to do the same, also messes around with electronics in her spare time.
- Neurodivergent and experienced at masking, considers most problems in life to be equations that she just needs to work out. Not always adept with social interactions. Often quiet and reserved when nervous, which is nearly all the time around Light. Able to imitate enthusiasm as needed, to a point. Shows fondness in subtle ways, but is capable of playing it up a bit despite it tiring her out a lot and her needing a lot of space afterwards.
- This Kira stuff she sees on the news doesn't really bother her, she figures it won't affect her and she's too busy to worry about it. Secretly she is a bit concerned, but as with any atrocity in the news, what can she do about it? Keep her head down and focusing on getting a degree so she can get on with her life, that's what.
- Light notices she notices something is off (he also knows her tells, but she has become better at hiding how she feels around him than when they were kids), and decides to pay more attention to her, gradually becoming more fascinated with what she does with her spare time, he should be focusing on the Death Note, but, but-
- He starts acting more caring and tries to be supportive toward her, she sort of accepts it as him being weird/possibly trying to reconnect (and in some cases plays along) but it seems he has an ulterior motive? She's suspicious and doesn't want him to know, it's sort of a dance of intentions, she wants to keep him at arm's length until she understands, he wants to be closer... and people she interacts closely with are starting to end up on the news as well, but never Light...
- Eventually she might find something incriminating, and then what? Either he has to kill her or somehow keep her where she can't let anyone know. Not sure how that goes.
- At some point in this mess of concern and uncertainty, she receives an anonymous text message: "Your suspicions are correct." It's actually L interfering having been able to observe her from a distance and wanting to throw a wrench in Light's plans. This only motivates Jo to play along with the romance facade as she tries to unravel this mess she's in...
- Maybe Light tries to intimidate her into keeping quiet or even joining him. Though he isn't about to risk her actually revealing him so if she gets even close to doing so, well...
- "There's something I've been meaning to tell you... But I think you already know what I'm going to say."
- If he does kill her she knows he's doing it and he pets her head the whole time like she's a wounded animal he's putting to sleep, before the notebook makes her wander to her inevitable death of course. It's creepy as fuck.
- Light is not a good person, and his reactions to her autistic traits tend to be a bit smothering/controlling. Do with that what you will but keep permissions in mind.
- It's so much more complicated in the end than pretending to love him for survival; there's plenty of bitterness and not wanting to be controlled (by either him or L) that makes everything so intense and it almost even circles around to something that could be loosely defined as love. It's certainly an obsession of sorts, but only because of his with her. She maintains, or would maintain if there was anyone to confide in who wasn't dead, that she wants nothing to do with him and would rather be left alone. But it's more complicated than that (and whose fault is that?).
And she also plays along to survive...
...what happens when it's made clear he's known this the whole time?
